Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics swatches and review

If there's something a make up obsessed person has wanted at least once in their lives is to own an Urban Decay Naked palette. However, last year I realized that my heart didn't beat faster anymore when I saw the Naked 2 (my preferred one). I already have similar shades and I grew out of it I guess. But the first time I saw the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics in store... I started feeling that way again.

A pesar de ello, el año pasado me di cuenta que mi corazón ya no latía tan fuerte cuando veía la Naked 2 (mi preferida). Ya tengo sombras parecidas y me dejaron de gustar supongo. Pero la primera vez que vi la Naked Ultimate Basics de Urban Decay en tienda... como que volví a sentir lo mismo.

The Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics is basically just what I search in a palette: cool and warm shadows that can work together, matte eyeshadows, and for a palette as pricy as this one, a palette I can travel with it (with a couple of pigments for example). And that stunning packaging doesn't hurt my infatuation neither.

La Naked Ultimate Basics de Urban Decay es básicamente lo que busco en una paleta: sombras en tonos fríos y calientes con las que se pueda trabajar a la vez, sombras mates y, para una paleta con un precio como el que tiene ésta, una con la que pueda viajar (con un par de pigmentos complementarios por ejemplo). Y esa preciosidad de diseño tampoco ayuda en mi infatuación.

The Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics is a palette consisting of 11 matte shades and 1 demi-matte as they call it, but I would say shimmery/satin. I really like how you can see that in the top row are the more cool toned shadows, and in the bottom row the more warm ones. And while the palette has cool and warm tones, I feel like the overall feel of the palette is very cool toned, although not as much as the NYX Cosmetics Ultimate Cool Neutrals Eyeshadow palette.

La Naked Ultimate Basics de Urban Decay es una paleta que consiste de 11 colores mate y 1 que describen como semi-mate, pero yo lo llamaría más bien satinado. Me gusta mucho cómo se puede ver que la fila superior es más de tonos fríos y la inferior de tonos cálidos. Y mientras la paleta tiene colores fríos y cálidos, a mí me parece que en general da sensación de ser fría, aunque no tanto como la Ultimate Cool Neutrals Eyeshadow palette de NYX Cosmetics.

All the shadows in the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics are made in the USA and the brush, which I might add isn't bad at all, is made in China.

I really like the color palette for the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics, how good they complement each other while still having pops of colors like the brick red Extra Bitter, the deep purple Lethal or the grayish blue Magnet. 

With these shadows I finally understood what "buttery" and "smooth" shadows are because while all the other shadows I own aren't necessarily chalky, none of them are as buttery as the majority of these. The ones specially smooth are: Tempted, Lethal, Lockout, Magnet and Blackjack (which also are the ones with the best pigmentation, except for Blackjack).

Me gustan mucho los colores de la Naked Ultimate Basics de Urban Decay, lo bien que se complementan entre ellos a la vez que tienen colores que llaman la atención como el rojo ladrillo Extra Bitter, el morado oscuro Lethal o el azul grisoso Magnet.
Con éstas sombras por fin entendí lo que la gente quiere decir cuando describen las sombras como "suaves como mantequilla" (¡sólo veo youtubers en inglés así que ni idea como se les dice en castellano!) y suaves, porque aunque el resto de sombras que tengo no son tizosas o malas para nada, ninguna es tan suave como la mayoría de las de ésta paleta. Las especialmente suaves son: Tempted, Lethal, Lockout, Magnet y Blackjack (que también son las que mejor pigmentación tienen, salvo Blackjack).

I swatched the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics colors first with a finger and then with a brush over the Essence I Love Stage Eyeshadow Base. I will review it here because a lot of people like it, but this has color in it which I personally don't like. It isn't as obvious on my eyelids as it is in my extra-pale forearm, so if you see any weird orangey areas that's the reason. I will be giving my opinions of each eyeshadow, and I've been trying this palette for more than a month before writing all these:

Los swatches de la Naked Ultimate Basics de Urban Decay los he hecho primero con dedo y el segundo con pincel sobre la base I Love Stage de Essence. Voy a hacer una entrada sobre ella porque a mucha gente parece gustarle, pero tiene color que personalmente no me gusta. No es tan obvio en mis párpados como en mi ante brazo híper pálido, así que si veis zonas naranjas es por eso. He dado mi opinión de cada sombra, ya que estuve probando la paleta exclusivamente durante más de un mes antes de escribir esto:

• Blow: I thought this shade wouldn't show at all on my skin, but it actually looks very pretty. I spray my brush with a little bit of water before using it to make it pop more and I love it to add shine to the center of the eyelid.
  Pensaba que este color no se iba a notar en mi piel, pero queda muy bonito. Por lo general la uso echando agua en spray a la brocha para resaltar más, me encanta usarla como color en el centro del párpado.
• Nudie: Chalkier comparing it to the ones I already said, it is truly a nude for me because it's just a little bit darker than my skin. I use it to set the eyeshadow base.
  Mucho más tizosa que las que ya he mencionado, de verdad que es un nude (literal: desnudo) para mí porque sólo es un poco más oscura que mi piel. La uso para fijar la base.
• Commando: I fell like it's the mauve version of Nudie, but it fails to maintain the color when blended. Personally it blends away to nothing.
  Me parece la versión mauve de Nudie, pero no mantiene el color cuando se trabaja. Personalmente, cuando la trabajo es como que desaparece.
• Tempted: a very pretty cool tone brown on the pan and on the eyelids. It's very buttery, pigmented and easy to work with. I love it as a transition shade.
  Un marrón frío muy bonito en la paleta y en los párpados. Es una sombra muy suave, pigmentada y fácil de trabajar. Me gusta usarla como color de transición.
• Instinct: on the pan it looks like a beautiful and very cool mauve eyeshadow, but on my eyelids it just looks brown with a hint of purple if you're looking for it. It needs a lot of building up for the color to show and not be just another brown. One of the worst of the palette without doubts.
  En la paleta parece un color mauve muy frío y precioso, pero en los párpados es más marrón con algo de morado si lo buscas que otra cosa. Requiere un montón de producto para que el color se aprecie bien y no sea simplemente otro marrón. Una de las peores de la paleta sin duda.
• Lethal: when I first saw this dark burgundy/purpleish brown on the pan I thought that it was going to be a mess and hard to work with, as all purples are. Surprisingly, it's really pigmented but buttery, and it look beautiful on the eyelid. It does lose intensity when you blend it, and I have to go back and apply more eyeshadow to make it pop. It also has a lot of kick back.
  Cuando vi ésta sombra borgoña/marrón morada oscura en la paleta pensaba que iba a ser un desastre y difícil de usar, como todas las moradas. Sorprendentemente, es muy pigmentada y suave, y queda preciosa en el párpado. Pierde intensidad al trabajarla, y tengo que volver a aplicar más sombra para devolvérsela.  También tiene bastante "kick back" (el polvo que suelta cuando se coge sombra con el pincel).

• Pre-game: no way this is ever going to show up on my skin. I don't know on darker skin tones, but I can only use Nudie and this one as bases after the pre-base or to blend darker colors, not to actually make something with them as colors. Nothing more to say as I only use it to set eye shadow base.
  Ésta sombra jamás va a parecer algo en mi tono de piel. No sé en pieles más oscuras, pero sólo puedo usar ésta y Nudie para fijar la base o combinar colores más oscuros, no para hacer algo como tal con ellas. Nada más que decir, sólo la uso para lo dicho.
• Extra Bitter: I love this brick red on the pan, but sadly it leans more to brown rather than red on my eyelids. As it happens with Lethal, it loses intensity when it's blended, so I have to go back to regain the intensity.
  Me encanta éste rojo ladrillo en la paleta, pero tristemente en el párpado tira mucho más para marrón que rojo. Igual que pasa con Lethal, pierde intensidad al trabajarla, así que tengo que aplicar más color luego.
• Faith: This one also has a lot of kick back because it's very pigmented. It's a little bit tricky to work with, a little bit hard to blend if you don't go light handed, I have to go step by step and building up the intensity.
  Ésta también tiene mucho kick back porque es muy pigmentada. Es un poco engorrosa de aplicar bien, y difícil trabajarla si no vas con mano ligera, tengo que ir pasito a pasito aumentando la intensidad.
• Lockout: I feel like this isn't really a warm tone brown, more like a neutral leaning towards cool. It's very buttery and easy to blend even if it's pigmented. I love to use it to define the eye socket.
  Éste marrón la verdad que no me parece cálido, me resulta más neutral tirando a frío. Me encanta usarlo para definir la cuenca el ojo.
• Magnet: while I don't really like blues, I was pretty excited about this one because it's different and loved that it leaned towards gray. But it's the other terrible color from the palette (the other one being Instinct). It's weird because it feels buttery on the pan, but it's super chalky on the eyelids and very hard to blend. I need a lot of shadow to be able to blend it and not have it look like a patchy mess, and on the eyelids it really looks like a faded gray/black.
  A pesar de que no me gustan las sombras azules, ésta me encantó verla por ser diferente, y me gusta que tire hacia gris. Pero es otra de las sombras terribles de la paleta (la otra es Instinct). Es raro porque con el dedo es súper suave, pero en el párpado es súper tizosa y muy muy difícil de trabajar. Necesito un montón de sombra para poder hacerlo bien y que no parezca un churro irregular, además que en el párpado es más un gris/negro de poca intensidad.
• Blackjack: disappointed (but nor surprised) that it isn't a deep black. It blends out to a color very similar to Magnet which meh. It's not really the worst black I've seen, but it is a disappointing one.
  Decepcionada (pero no sorprendida) que no sea un negro oscuro. Al trabajarla se vuelve de un color muy similar a Magnet que en fin. No es el peor negro que he visto, es uno decepcionante y ya.

I think the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics is a good quality palette, but a really, truly basic one. I also think like that, and it could be a very personal opinion, while I like matte eyeshadows I like something to "pop" on my eyes, and I can't do it with this.


Aunque todavía babeo cada vez que abro la Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics, de ninguna manera puede ser mi única paleta de viaje. Me decepcionaron muchísimo sobre todo dos sombras, Instinct y Magnet, y cómo todos los marrones, ya sean fríos o cálidos, se mezclan y confunden.

Creo que la Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics es una paleta buena, pero básica de verdad. También creo que, y esto es una opinión totalmente personal, mientras que me gustan las sombras mate necesito algo que destaque en los ojos, y no se consigue con ésta.

I wouldn't necessarily say you need the Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics palette, but if you're like me and don't really go for the whole "insta thot warm nude tones", I think this is a great nude palette to have, but as a complimentary palette to other ones, not a standalone.

The Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics retails for 51€ in Spain, which I feel is way overpriced for the overall quality. But if you have discount codes, or Sephora birthday-money (at least in Spain, if you're Sephora Gold, you get 30€ to spend on the store for your birthday) and don't own any similar palettes, definitely check it out. You can buy it internationally here.


No diría que necesitas las Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics, pero si eres como yo y no te va el look "malota de instagram con tonos nude cálidos" creo que es una paleta de básicos buena para tener, pero como complemento a otras, no única paleta.

La Urban Decay Naked Ultimate Basics se vende en España por 51€, que me parece muy por encima de lo que debería costar por la calidad en general. Pero si tienes códigos descuento, o dinero del cumpleaños de Sephora (por lo menos en España si se es Sephora Gold, por tu cumpleaños te dan 30€ para gastar en Sephora) y no tienes ya ninguna paleta similar, échale un ojo. La puedes comprar internacionalmente aquí.
