NYX Cosmetics Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette swatches and review

I was searching for a good neutral platte that would suit me, and I came across this NYX Cosmetics Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette while shopping for their Lip Lingerie Embellishment (review to come).

For some years I tried using all-brown make up looks, the ones obviously popularized bu the Kardashian-Jenner sisters. But over and over I felt really self conscious and, in a way, uncomfortable, so I never went outside wearing an all-brown-nudeish makeup face. And I discovered why this year: Those color don't suit my skin tone!

It might be obvious for some people, but not to other. If some colors don't compliment your skin tone, they're not going to look good on you (same reason why some color on clothes work better for you). So I've completely given up on that "in your face but natural brown-y" makeup look, because my undertone is obviously cool, which doesn't really get along with warm colors. 

Llevaba tiempo buscando una paleta de tonos neutros que fuera bien con mi piel, y me encontré por internet con ésta Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette de NYX Cosmetics mientras compraba el Lip Lingerie Embellishment (entrada por publicar).

Durante varios años he intentado utilizar esos looks marrones obviamente popularizados por las hermanas Kardahasian-Jenner. Pero todas las veces que lo intentaba termina, de un modo, sintiéndome súper incómoda y nunca salí a la calle llevando un maquillaje nude-marrón completo. Y el año pasado descubrí porqué: ¡Esos colores no complementan mi tono de piel!

Por si acaso no lo sabéis, algunos colores no complementan ciertos tonos de piel, y no van a quedar bien en ésas (misma razón por la que algunos colores de ropa nos quedan mejor que otros). Así que por supuesto me he rendido con ese look "maquillaje natural pero completo de marrones", porque mi subtono es obviamente frío, que no se lleva precisamente bien con colores cálidos.

NYX Cosmetics is a let's say, low budget, drugstore, cosmetics company that was bought by L'Oreal in 2014 (and that's why they stopped selling NYX in a lot of stores in Spain and I suppose other countries). So it's no surprise that the package is simple, made of plastic and honestly feels a little bit delicate (ahem, cheap). But I'm not complaining because it's also really useful that you can actually see the shadows without having to open the palette.

And I also like the fact that it doesn't have a mirror, I never use the ones in palettes anyway and they always get dirty. The thing I do complain about though it's that the shadows don't have names, I always hate when makeup products (or nail polishes) don't have names. I had faith and look for names in and inside the sticker in the back (below photo), but there really isn't any.

NYX Cosmetics es una marca digamos de bajo costo, que fue comprada por L'Oreal en 2014 (razón por la que dejaron de vender NYX en muchas tiendas de España, supongo que también en otros países). Así que no es sorpresa que la paleta en sí sea simple, hecha de plástico y sinceramente, parece un poco delicada (cough barata). Pero no me quejo porque me gusta que se puedan ver las sombras sin abrir la caja.

También me gusta que no tenga espejo, nunca utilizo los que vienen en las paletas y siempre se ensucian. De lo que sí me quejo un poquito es de que las sombras no tengan nombre, no me gusta cuando el maquillaje (o pinta uñas) no tienen nombres. Tenía esperanza y mire en la pegatina y dentro de ella, pero ni rastro.

Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette de NYX Cosmetics es una paleta de 16 sombras que obviamente está destina a gente con subtono frío. La colección Ultimate Shadow Palette consiste de diferentes paletas que se ajustan a diferente gente: bright colors (colores vivos), warm neutrals (neutros cálidos), smokey & high lights (ahumados y highlight) y ésta.

It has a great variety of matte and shimmer shadows, as well as lighter and darker shades. It also has a beautiful duochrome color that reminds me of "Girly" from Too Faced' Pretty Rebel palette, although this NYX one is browner. It's fantastic that the more brown colors, and the ones more skin-like for skins like mine, are matte so they can be used as transition and blending colors.


Tiene una gran variedad de sombras mate y brillante, así como colores claros y oscuros. También tiene una sombra preciosa duochrome que me recuerda a "Girly" de la paleta Pretty Rebel de Too Faced, aunque la de NYX es más marrón. Es genial que los colores marrones, y los que son más parecidos a mi piel, sean mates para poder usarse como colores de transición "mezcla" (creo que se dice así en castellano, lo siento pero no estoy acostumbrad a utilizar estos términos en castellano).

I took swatches with both my fingers and an eyeshadow brush (left: finger swatch, right: brush swatch) for you to get an idea of the pigmentation in this NYX Cosmetics Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette. The side of the brush I used was de denser one, at the top in the photo. I used Too Faced 's Shadow Insurance as a primer underneath because I always use it as a primer on my eyes.

He hecho los swatches tanto con dedo como con brocha (izquierda: swatch con dedos, derecha: swatch con brocha) para que os hagáis una idea de la pigmentación de ésta Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette de NYX Cosmetics. La parte de la brocha que he usado es la más densa, en la foto la que queda hacia arriba, y he utilizado como primer el Shadow Insurance de Too Faced porque siempre lo utilizo en los ojos.

This first row of colors was so difficult to capture on camera. As you can see the pigmentation is really low, although it looks better in person to be honest. In the eyes it takes some time to build the color. It was exactly what I expected from these shadows.

La primera fila de colores se me hizo bastante difícil de capturar en cámara. Como podéis apreciar la pigmentación es muy baja, aunque la verdad que s even mejores en persona. En los ojos lleva un tiempito hacer que se vean correctamente los colores. Exactamente lo que esperaba de ésta sombras.

For this second row you can see that as the colors get darker, the pigmentation gets a lot better. The shimmery shades, specially the first one, is difficult to make them show up here and in the eyes. They don't have fallout which is a good thing.


En ésta segunda fila se puede apreciar que a medida que los colores se hacen más oscuros, la pigmentación va siendo mejor. Los colores brillante, especialmente el primero, son difíciles de que se vean bien aquí y en los ojos. Aunque no tienen caída hacia la cara, lo que es bueno.

I love this row: the shadows are super pigmented, not chalky and super easy to work with them. And I also had two surprises: the duochrome actually looks like it in the eyelid and the last brown color is sooo pigmented it caught me by total surprise when I first used it, and apply too much of it.


Me encanta ésta fila: las sombras son súper pigmentadas, muy fáciles de trabajar y no son tizosas. También me ha dado dos sorpresas: el color duochromo lo parece de verdad incluso en los ojos y el último marrón es tan pigmentado que la primera vez que lo usé utilicé demasiado.

This fourth and final row is also good. The pigmentation is really good and the fact that the black with shimmer really holds the shimmer even in the eyelids and has minimal fallout is amazing. The purple is chalky and not really great as a shadow, but I love purple eyeshadows and this is something that happens with all of them. If you know of a deep purple eyeshadow that isn't chalky please let me know!


Ésta última fila es también muy buena. La pigmentación es genial y el hecho de que la sombra blanca con brillo aguante el brillo incluso en los párpados y apenas tenga caídas hacia la cara es genial. El morado es tizoso y una sombra no muy buena, pero adoro las sombras moradas y esto me pasa con todas. Si sabéis de una sombra morada oscura que no sea así, decídmelo por favor.


Overall I love the NYX Cosmetics Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette, it has become my new obsession. I was not expecting much from it, even though I paid 17,90€, but it has pleasantly surprised me. Apart from the good application, they really have good duration and don't disappear through the day as some low-budget shadows do. If you have cool undertones definitely give it a try! I can't recommend the other ones from the collection (since I don't have them), but this is a yes from me.

En general adoro la Ultimate Cool Neutrals Shadow Palette de NYX Cosmetics, se ha convertido en mi nueva obsesión. Siendo honesta, no esperaba demasiado, aunque pagué 17,90€, pero me ha sorprendido gratamente. Además de la buena aplicación, las sombras tienen muy buena duración y no van desapareciendo a los largo del día como para con otras sombras de "gama baja". Si tenéis subtono frío, ¡dadle una oportunidad! No puede recomendar las otras paletas de ésta colección (porque no las tengo), pero ésta es un gran SÍ.
