Bershka Express Face Detox masks: a full review

When I came back to Spain and one of my friends told me that Bershka same out with a cosmetics line I was surprised and borderline disturbed.

However, when I looked at it online I found myself thinking "well, this doesn't look that bad..." and since they are made and commercialized in Spain they should meet, at least, some manufacturing standards. So I also thought "why not" and bought the 5 skincare product for face they have as for now (plus a body scrub and body butter).

I used to hate Bershka, years ago you wouldn't catch me even dead inside one of their stores. But I don't know what happened to it a couple of years ago, I guess a new team that was in charge of revamping the image, but it actually became my favorite Inditex store. I think it's very clever how they (and sister company Stradivarius) have come out with affordable cosmetics, it's only a matter of time to buy something from the line while shopping for clothes.


Cuando volví a España y una de mis amigas me dijo que Bershka había sacado línea de cosméticos me sorprendió y me daba como mal a la nariz.

Sin embargo, cuando miré los productos en la web online pensé que tampoco parecían tan mal... y como están fabricados y comercializados en España por lo menos tienen que cumplir unas normas y estándares. Así que pensé "por qué no" y compré los 5 producto que tienen de momento para la cara (más un exfoliante y crema corporal).

Solía odiar Bershka, hace años no me hubierais pillado ni muerta en una de sus tiendas. Pero no sé qué pasó hace unos dos o tres años, supongo que un nuevo equipo con el cometido de renovar la imagen, pero hoy en día es mi tienda de Inditex favorita con diferente. Creo que es muy inteligente cómo (y su empresa asociada Stradivarius) han sacado cosméticos, que incluyen maquillaje, a precios asequibles, es sólo cuestión de tiempo el comprar algo mientras se compra ropa.

First things first, I love the design in these masks/face products. All of them with a different touch but following the same (great) aesthetics; I don't know who was in charge of product design here, but congratulations. I think this is an awesome design job, from the colors, to the font, to packaging design. All of these are only 10ml, so they are small, not even as big as my hand (although I do admit I have long fingers). I was actually expecting a bigger packaging but this size (the cupboards are 8cmx11'40cm) does make sense. All of these are described to be products for just one use.

Which I don't love it's the execution of the packaging. It's a plastic container, plastic lid, in a cupboard-plastic "focal point" and plastic bag. It's such a waste of plastic I even felt a little uncomfortable using them. I don't know how this could be improved, but this isn't it. And I also have kind of a problem with everything being so english orientated when Bershka is a Spaniard company... Like, I understand globalization but let's not think we're less for not using english.


Lo primero de todo decir que me encanta el diseño de éstas mascarillas/productos para la cara. Todos son diferentes pero siguiente la misma estética (lo que me ha costado no decir aesthetics...ups); no sé quién ha estado a cargo del diseño aquí, pero enhorabuena. Creo que es un trabajo de diseño fantástico, desde los colores, a la letra, al diseño del producto. Todos estos contienen sólo 10ml de producto, así que son pequeños, ni siquiera tan grandes como mi mano (aunque admito que tengo los dedos muy largos). La verdad que estaba esperando que fueran más grandes pero éste tamaño (8cmx11,40cm) tiene sentido. Todos son descritos como productos de un sólo uso.

Lo que ya no me gusta tanto es la ejecución del embalaje/producto en sí. Es un contenedor de plástico, tapa de plástico, un foco del producto que es de cartón-plástico y una bolsa de plástico. Es tanto plástico que incluso me he sentido un poco a disgusto usándolos. No sé cómo se podría mejor esto, pero no así. También me pica un poco que todo esté tan orientado al inglés en el producto cuando Bershka es una compañía española... Entiendo la globalización, pero tampoco pensemos que somos menos que nadie por no usar inglés.

This clay mask, described as a nourishing and purifying clay mask, is to be used after cleansing on dry face, as all clay masks basically. After 20-25 minutes it should be completely dry and ready to remove with warm water.


Ésta mascarilla de arcilla, descrita como nutritiva y purificadora, es para usar después de limpiar la piel estando ésta seca, como todas las mascarillas de arcilla vaya. Después de 20-25 minutos debería estar completamente seca y lista para eliminar con agua.

On the ingredient list, apart from kaolin (clay) I was pleasantly surprised to see aloe and avocado extract and lecithin. These gave me the idea that the mask could be a good clay mask without being overly drying (like a lot of green clay masks are).


En la lista de ingredientes, además de kaolin (arcilla) me sorprendió muy gratamente encontrar extracto de aloe y aguacate y lecitina. Estos me dieron la idea de que ésta mascarilla tenía las papeletas para ser una buena mascarilla de arcilla sin ser demasiado seca (como la mayoría de mascarillas verdes lo son).

The consistency is like a cream-type mask, not like a typical clay mask, but plain cream so I was skeptical about if it would dry down (it did). I don't know what it was but I almost couldn't apply this: it was itchy all over the face, but I didn't give it importance because most wash off mask are itchy a few minutes for me, but on the sides of the nose and the chin (where my skin is very sensitive), holly hell, it burned. I was so close to removing it but for the purpose of this review I kept it on. These sensations (the itching and burning) calmed after a few minutes. After removing it I didn't notice significant improvement in my skin, and usually clay masks act fast on my skin.

Buy or pass? Big, big pass. Specially if you have sensitive skin, this will make you want to rip it off your face as soon as it touches it.


La consistencia es la de una mascarilla tipo crema, no como la típica de arcilla, pero crema sin más, por lo que no las tenía todas conmigo de que fuera a secarse (pero lo hizo). No sé que fue lo que lo provocó, pero casi no pude aplicármela: me empezó a picar toda la cara, a lo que no di mucha importancia porque me suele pasar con algunas cremas y luego la sensación desaparece pero cuando me la di en la barbilla y los lados de la nariz (donde tengo la piel más sensible) el horror, me ardía. Estuve a puntísimo de quitármela pero me la dejé por hacer ésta entrada completa. Las dos sensación (picazón y ardor) se calmaron después de unos minutos. Después de retirármela no noté ninguna diferencia, y normalmente las mascarillas de arcilla actúan en mi piel al momento.

¿Comprar o pasar? Pasar pero de largo y sin mirar atrás. Especialmente si tienes la piel sensible, va a querer hacer que te la arranques de la cara nada más la toque.

The overnight mask, which is more commonly referred as sleeping pack, is to be used as the last step in a night time skincare routine. These don't stain sheet and they're absorbed by the skin, and the following morning if you notice a film (similar to when hand creams create a film on hands) you just remove it with water.


Ésta mascarilla facial nocturna, que veo más común que se les llame sleeping pack, es para usar como último paso de la rutina nocturna. No manchan las sábanas y la piel las absorbe, si a la mañana siguiente se tiene la sensación de un film en la cara (similar al que crean las cremas de manos) simplemente se enjuaga con agua.

The ingredient list hints to, at least, a good mask: aloe and fruit extracts, different seed oils, lactic acid, glycerin... The scent is really good, for those of you like me that like cosmetics that smell but that don't transfer it to skin, it smells like artificial orange juice. I like orange juice smell even if it's of those really artificial juices at the supermarket.


La lista de ingredientes augura a, por lo menos, una buena mascarillas: extractos de fruta y aloe, diferentes aceites de semillas, ácido láctico, glicerina... El olor es muy bueno, para aquellos que, como yo, le gustan que los cosméticos huelan pero no se transfiera a la piel, huele como zumo de naranja artificial. Me gusta el olor de zumo de naranja incluso cuando es artificial como el de los zumos de los supermercados.

The "Time To Sleep, Babe" overnight mask is not of single use at all, there's too much product of it to be a single use one. After I used it the first night I put the product in a closing container and continue to use it on the following nights. This mask is really, really good. It applies great, skin (at least mine) loves it and absorbs it fast, the following morning skin looks better, more hydrated and with a subtle glow.

Buy or pass? Buy now. I wish there was a full size version because I'd buy it in a heartbeat.


La mascarilla nocturna "Time To Sleep, Babe" (hora de dormir, ¿muñeca?, ¿pequeña? Babe es una expresión en inglés que no conlleva infatilización, no sé muy bien qué podría ser así en castellano) no es de un sólo uso, hay demasiado producto para que lo sea. Después de usarla por primera vez la guardé en un tarrito y la usé también las noches siguiente. Ésta mascarillas es muy muy buena, Se aplica genial, a la piel (por lo menos la mía) le encanta y la absorbe súper rápido y a la mañana siguiente se ve mejor, más hidratada y con un brillo sutil genial.

¿Comprar o pasar? Comprar ya. Ojalá hubiera una versión a tamaño grande porque la compraba en un momento.

This wash off mask described as a recharging gel, this should be applied on wet skin after cleansing, left on for 10-15 minutes and then remove with warm water.


Ésta mascarilla que hay que retirar con agua se describe como un gel refrescante (que no es traducción literal del inglés), se debe aplicar después de limpiar la cara, dejar durante 10-15 minutos y después aclarar con agua tibia.

The ingredient list look also pretty good with fruit, seed and root extract. Propanediol is used to help absorbtion of product; phenoxyethanol is a preservative that it's controversial but legal to use worldwide, but it has a EWG rating of 4, so a medium hazard level. Those CI ones are colorants.


La lista de ingredientes parece bastante decente con extracto de frutas, semillas y raíces. Propanediol se usa para ayudar a la absorción de los productos; phenoxyethanol es un preservativo que es controvertido pero legar en el mundo entero, aunque tiene una clasificación de 4 (riesgo medio) en la escala EWG. Los CI son colorantes.

I don't get this gel/mask. It's supposed to be relaxing but I feel it's just a feeling because of the smell, I don't understand why this is relaxing to the skin. While applying this I also had a very strong itchy sensation, but it stoped after a few seconds.
This is another one that I wouldn't use all of it in a single use, so I also used what I thought was good and then decant it to another container.

Buy or pass? Pass. I don't understand the point of it and sensitive skin definitely reacts to it.


No entiendo éste gel/mascarilla. Se supone que tiene que ser relajante pero creo que es una sensación por el olor, no entiendo cómo puede relajar la piel. Aplicando esto también tuve sensación de picazón, pero paró después de unos segundos.
Otro producto que no creo que sea de un sólo uso, así que lo pasé también a otro tarrito.

¿Comprar o pasar? Pasar. No entiendo su "razón de ser" y la piel sensible va a reaccionar a ello.

This exfoliating gel is the only that the brand states on the website that it's vegan, not tested on animals and paraben free, although all of them are paraben free so I'm also inclined to believe that all of them reunite those characteristics and they just forgot to highlight it in the website (feel totally free to correct me on this, though).


Éste gel exfoliante es el único que la marca especifica que es vegano, no testado en animales y libre de parabenos, aunque todos ellos son libres de parabenos así que creo que todos tiene ésas características y que se olvidaron de resaltarlo en la web (sed totalmente libres de corregirme si me equivoco, por cierto).

It has citric and lactic acid, which are really good AHAs, but they are towards the end of the list so...


Tiene ácido cítrico y láctico, que son AHAs muy buenos, pero están hacia el final de la lista de ingredientes así que no sé...

Bershka "Sweetheart, Wash Away Your Troubles" exfoliating gel product

This is a gel with a a physical scrub, which is the "bambusa arundinacea stem powder", bamboo stem powder. It's very important to me, and the environment, that it's not a plastic scrub as I explained briefly in this Rituals entry. It felt really refreshing for the skin in those 10-15 minutes, the scrub particles are a little bit harsh so I couldn't apply pressure at all.
I was ready to love this, or at least give it a second chance (because I didn't use everything in one time) but when I went to remove it, the gel was absorbed (which is normal) and the scrubbing particles, now white, were very very visible. I took some in my wet hands to rub them and they didn't seem to dissolve. I've read that bamboo particles are biodegradable, but since they don't dissolve in water like sugar scrubbing particles do, it feels too harsh for the skin type I have.

Buy or pass? If you don't have very sensitive skin, buy if you want to try this type of products or are going on a trip, this last one would be my reason to purchase it again.


Esto es un gel con exfoliante físico, que es el "bambua arundinacea stem powder", polovo de raíz de bamboo. Es muy importante para mí, y el medio ambiente, que no sea un exfoliante de plástico, como ya expliqué brevemente en ésta entrada de Rituals. La verdad que noté la piel muy fresquita en esos 10-15 minutos, a pesar de que las partículas exfoliantes eran bastante duras y no pude aplicar presión para nada.
Estaba preparada para que me encanta, o por lo menos a darle otra oportunidad (ya que no usé todo el producto de una vez) pero cuando fui a retirarlo con agua, el gel había sido absorbido por la piel (que es lo normal) y las partículas exfoliante, ahora blanca, eran muy muy visibles. Tomé algunas con manos mojadas, y a pesar de frotarlas, no parecían disolverse. He leído que las partículas de bambú son biodegradables, pero al no disolverse en agua como los exfoliantes de azúcar, me resulta muy duro para el tipo de piel que tengo.

¿Comprar o pasar? Si no tienes la piel muy sensible, comprar si quieres probar éste tipo de productos o vas de viaje, eso último siendo la razón por la que la compraría otra vez.

Liquid in the package, this peel off mask described as smoothing should be applied it as homogenous as possible, leave it for 20-25 minutes and then peel it off.


Líquido en el paquete, ésta mascarilla de "despegar" (de las que se quedan pegadas a la cara y luego hay que retirarlas pero no con agua, la traducción que han usado en el paquete es "mascarillas en film" pero eh...) que se describe como alisante/alisadora/suavizante se debe aplicar todo lo homogéneamente que se puede, dejarla durante 20-25 minutos y después quitarla.

Out of all the masks this has the shortest ingredient list, which honestly surprised me given that is a liquid that "solidifies" but I'm no way near a chemist so. I searched for PVA an it's polyvinyl alcohol, in charge of thickening the gel and making it a peel off mask.


De todas las mascarillas ésta tiene la lista de ingredientes más corta, que la verdad me sorprendió dado que es un líquido que se "solidifica" pero no soy química de lejos así que. Busqué sobre PVA y es alcohol polivinílico, que es el que se encarga de endurecer el gel y volverlo "film".

The "Yeah, It's My Secret Filter" peel off mask does nothing, or at least I didn't notice any change after I took it off. The container comes full, so applying it kind of homogenous is easy but boy, was it difficult to get it not to drip everywhere. It got down my nose, my lips, my eyebrows and my neck, you have to be absolutely horizontal so it doesn't slide down. I took it off after 30 minutes and it was relatively easy, it didn't hurt (I was expecting it to do it) and didn't remove any hair from my face. Some areas in my cheeks didn't completely dry down but because it was as homogenous as I thought. I saw my skin exactly the same afterwards.

Buy or pass? Pass. If it does something is not noticeable.

PS: don't worry, I didn't apply that to my face, it was just for photo purposes. I actually bought another one to try it.


La mascarilla en film"Yeah, It's My Secret Filter" no hace nada, o al menos yo no noté ningún cambio después de quitármela. El bote viene lleno, así que la verdad que aplicarlo por igual por toda la cara es fácil pero, madre mía, goteaba por todas partes. Goteó desde mi nariz, mi barbilla, a los labios, las cejas... hay que estar absolutamente en horizontal para que el líquido no resbale. Me la quité después de 30 minutos y fue relativamente fácil, no me dolió (lo que estaba esperando que hiciera) y no me quitó ningún pelo de la cara. En algunas partes de mis mejillas había zonas que no se habían secado pero porque se ve que no la apliqué tan bien como pensaba. Noté mi piel exactamente igual después.

¿Comprar o pasar? Pasar. Si hace algo no se nota.

PD: no os preocupéis, no me di eso en la cara, sólo fue para la foto. Compré otra para probarla.

Laboratories || Laboratorios

K-Cirevam are the Spanish laboratories behind these cosmetics products from Bershka. With a quick internet search I learned something that, if you've ever lived in Spain, is very interesting: turns out the K-Cirevam laboratories founders are the daughters or the man that founded Maverick. This company was the main supplier of cosmetics of one of the largest and more famous supermarket chain in Spain, Mercadona. Maverick was sold to Mercadona in 2006, and after a no-competition agreement of 5 years, the daughters founded K-Cirevam, which is "Maverick" backwards. Took it out from this newspaper article.


K-Cirevam son los laboratorios españoles detrás de éstos productos cosméticos de Bershka. Con una rápida búsqueda en google encontré algo que, si habéis vivido en España, es bastante interesante: resulta que los fundadores de los laboratorios K-Cirevam son las hijas del hombre que fundó Maverick. Ésa compañía era el mayor proveedor de cosmética de una de las cadenas de supermercados más grande y famosa de España, Mercadona. Maverick se vendió a Mercadona en 2006 y, tras un acuerdo de no competitividad de 5 años, las hijas fundaron K-Cirevam, que es "Maverick" del revés. Sacado de éste artículo de periódico.

Final thoughts || En general

These masks are not cheap or inexpensive at all, 10ml for 3€ (2'99€ if you want to be picky about it) it rather expensive, but for someone who wants to get into masking or skincare or if you're going on a trip and don't have mini sizes to bring with you and don't want to bring full sizes these are strong options to consider.


Éstas mascarillas no son baratas para nada, 10ml por 2€ (2,99€ si os queréis poner quisquillosos) es bastante caro, pero para alguien quiere empezar a usar mascarillas o si se va de viaje y no se quiere llevar tamaños completos son una opción a considerar.
