Ever since Tony Moly launched years ago the Backstage Gel Eyeliner it has been one of their (if not their) number one selling product. I even remember that a couple of years ago one of my friends told me how one of her friends worked for Chanel makeup and still preferred the Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner.

I bought mine when came to South Korea for the first time, 2 years ago, and I stoped using my ultimate favorite liquid eyeliner (L'Oreal Perfect Slim Eyeliner in case you're wondering) because I liked much more the korean eyeliner. So when last year Tony Moly came out with the cushion eyeliner, with great looking packaging I must say, I knew I had to get my hands on it.

To make it fair, I have both version in black, because I like my eyeliner black. Sometimes purple or burgundy, but mostly black. Although I do plan on buying a couple more of the winning one from this entry in some amazing colors that they have.

1.- The Product/ El Producto

Let me state the obvious first: the Backstage Gel Eyeliner is your regular gel pot eyeliner, comes with 3,5g of product and you need to be sure the case is always properly closed so it doesn't dry out.

On the other hand, the Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner is, as the name suggest, a cushion eyeliner that for me is honestly liquid; how would you get product out of a cushion if it's actually gel and not liquid? You can't. Anyway, after cushions BB Creams, blushes, sunscreens... it was no surprise to finally see this product. The Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner has 2,5g of product.

Both versions I have come with the brush integrated in the design, although the Backstage Gel eyeliner pot can be bought separately. I really like the sleek design of the "original" but if you're wondering which one is my favorite... I mean, come on, there isn't even a competition, of course is the Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner.  Totally reminiscing of the times where people would write with feathers, even the product name being integrated, it honestly reminds me of Harry Potter.

The design of the original, while sleek, is worse. I hate how the product name and "sticker" looks now, even after storage and using so much that the "top area" where the brush is inserted is broken.
Although I think those two points were improved in the newest release, and even if I find it aesthetically pleasing, it is also true that it has a lot of pointless packaging. Like, look how big the top part of the pot is, was it necessary even if the brush does go inside of it?

3.- Brush/ Pincel

Being used to pen-like eyeliners, I wasn't at first a fan of the Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner brush. It took me some time to get used to the shorter brush but once I did, I began loving it. The brush is flat and flexible enough to work with it but not too flexible to not have control of what you are doing. It has a round shape instead of a pointy tip, which allows it to slide on the eyelid easier.
The brush itself might seem too flat, but it's actually really dense and allow to pick a controlled amount of product and work with it without making strong lines. I really like the brush, I just wish the "holder" was longer (but I can always use an eyeliner brush).

As far as the brush for the Tony Moly Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner I don't want to be mean, but I mean, it kind of sucks. The metallic part of the brush is fixed, so you either adapt to the way it fits in the hands with the feather hard plastic design or suck it in. Months after I bought it, I'm still not used to the feather design and I find uncomfortable how I have to hold it so I can draw lines on my eyelids. I find it specially uncomfortable when I'm doing my left eye's eyeliner, since I'm right handed.
The brush itself is also shitty. It looks dense and has the same shape as the other version, but the fibers are different. If you look at the tips, it looks like it opens in the middle part and it only gets worse when you try to pick up product (when it should be the opposite, fibers coming together because of the product... anyway). And without forgetting to mention that it seems like it just sucks out all the product and leaves the minimum to do the liner.

The Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner is a great gel eyeliner, really easy to work with. I wasn't used to this types of liners, so it took me some time to get the right quantity of product on the brush to do lines comfortably on the eyelid. I would say not to be shy with it, chances are if you pick too much product you'll just have more product to extend on the eyelid, which isn't really a tragedy. It makes opaque, pitch black line with just one stroke, and if you "draw" over it it doesn't move.

Once the Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner dries, it lasts for hours without even smudging or transferring. And when I means hours I mean that I've put it to test partying all night (and I'm Spaniard so you know I mean having my makeup done by 11pm and not going back home till 6am), which involves changing temperatures, sweat and just a lot of hours. It is true that most of the times when I know I'm going to have my eyeliner for 5+ hours I use setting spray, but my previous eyeliner didn't perform as well in the same conditions.

On the other hand, the Tony Moly Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner (let me get this out of my chest) kind of sucks. First because I never get the right amount of product in the brush, and by that I mean that I never seem to pick enough to draw a smooth line. The first few times I pressed the brush into the cushion with fear of product coming out every way, but it just never comes out. Now I have to press hard the brush against the cushion to get a decent (and I use the term decent loosely) amount on it.
Drawing something with it is unbearable, most of the time I just give up and finish my eyeliner with the gel version. It never does a good stroke, the color is never homogenous and if I want to "re-draw" something it will take off the color. Once it dries down it doesn't have the same "staying power" as the gel, it smudges and bleeds. It's only after a few hours that it does that, but it's still pretty terrible to go to the bathroom in the middle of your morning and see that the eyeliner you've applied just 3 hours ago has transferred to the lower lash line and onto the crease of the eyes.

5.- Final thoughts: veredict/Final: veredicto

I'm honestly doing this final point just in case someone needs a little bit more convincing on how bad, terrible the Tony Moly Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner is.
The only positive thing it has is the cute design, but not even that is worth the money it costs. Because this one has lees product and it's actually more expensive:

  • Tony Moly Inked Cushion Gel Eyeliner: 2,5g of product for 10,800won.
  • Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner: 3,5g of product for 8,500won.
Don't fall victim of marketing (like I did heh) and save money by buying the very superior Tony Moly Backstage Gel Eyeliner. Even if you use other eyeliners, I strongly recommend you to try this one, it's my favorite by a long shot (and yes, including western and asian brands).
