Note: I hate taking product photos when I'm almost done with them, but I had a lot of trouble with the first pictures I took of the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence.

SK-II is a Japanese brand that sells only high-end skincare and beauty products, with prices going hand in hand and not being the most affordable to everyone. It was launched in 1980, after being developed on the 70's: as they tell on their official website, they discovered that workers in sake breweries had youthful hands even if they were elders, because their hands were submerged daily in ferment yeast. They then started investigating it, coming out with their very own Pitera ingredient.

El Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II ha sido uno de los productos para el cuidado de la piel más famoso de los últimos años, incluso ojeando revistas viejas lo veía (de 2010 y más antiguas). Así que decir que estaba muy contenta por probarlo por fin es quedarse un poco corta.
Nota: odio sacar fotos a productos cuando ya he usado tanto, pero tuve muchos problemas con las fotos que saqué antes de empezar a usar el Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II.

SK-II es una marca japonesa que sólo vende cosméticos de alta gama, con los precios acompañando por supuesto, por lo que no son de lo más asequibles para todos los bolsillos. Se lanzó al mercado en 1980, después de haber estado en desarrollo en los años 70: como cuentan en la página web, descubrieron que los trabajadores en las fábricas de sake tenían las manos jóvenes a pesar de ser mayores/ancianos, porque tenían las manos sumergidas a diario en levadura fermentada. Por lo que empezaron a investigarlo, consiguiendo su "propio-producto" ingrediente llamado Pitera.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence dispenser

The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is an essence that claims to do a lot: texture refinement, firmness power, wrinkle resistance, even skin tone and radiance enhancement. The brand describes the Facial Treatment Essence as a balancing essence that moisturizes and brightens, discovering the "secret key to youthful, radiant skin". By the way, Secret Key=SK.

The packaging of the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is everything a expensive product should be (at least in my opinion): sleek design, frosty sturdy glass bottle and minimal packaging since it comes in a cupboard box. The only thing I would improve is to substitute the "system" to apply it and put a pump, but that's totally personal and because I'm biased towards dispensers. This bottle contains 75ml, the smallest in the market.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ingredients

The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence ingredient list is unsurprisingly really short as you can see. You can also read it online here in Skincarisma. The first ingredient, the "Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate" is the Pitera ingredient that is exclusive (and secret) to SK-II. The concentration of it is 90%, and the brand itself explains the ingredient as "a bio-ingredient rich in vitamins, organic acids, mineral and amino acids that work together to enhance skin cell renewal". It supposedly has anti aging and hydrating properties, and its formulation is actually a secret only known to the company: Pitera is exclusive of SK-II.

Since the ingredients are 90% fermented, the scent of the product is strong, which you can like (as I do) or don't like, but it fades eventually on the skin.


La lista de ingredientes del Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II es muy corta como podéis comprobar.  Podéis leerla también aquí en Skincarisma. El primer ingrediente, el "Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate" (filtrado de fermento de galactomyces) es el ingrediente Pitera exclusivo (y secreto) de SK-II. La concentración es del 90%, y la marca explica el ingrediente como un bio ingrediente rico en vitaminas, ácidos orgánicos, minerales y amino ácidos que trabajan conjuntamente para mejorar la renovación de células de la piel. Se supone también que es anti envejecimiento y que tiene propiedades humectantes, y su fórmula es un secreto sólo disponible para la marca: Pitera es exclusivo de SK-II.

Como los ingredientes son un 90% fermentados, el olor es bastante fuerte, que te puede gustar (como a mí) o no, pero con el tiempo se va yendo de la piel.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is a very runny and liquid essence that the skin absorbs super fast. I dispensed some drops on my palms, warm is by rubbing them for a bit and then apply it with light touches to the skin (the way the brands recommends).

As excited as I was for the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, after using it for more than 4 months I have yet to see any change in my skin. Some people on instagram told me that they started noticing how it changed their skin after they stoped using it, so if that's the case for me I'll come back when I am completely done but for now... I'm just incredible disappointed. The SK-II Facial Treatment Essence has a price of $100 for 75ml, so for a product that expensive to not induce any noticeable change... It just doesn't feel right.


El Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II es una esencia muy acuosa y líquida y que la piel absorbe muy rápido. Me daba varias gotas en las palmas de la mano, las calentaba un poco y luego me la aplicaba en la piel con toquecitos suaves (como la marca recomienda hacer).

A pesar de lo emocionada que estaba por probar el Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II, después de usarlo durante más de cuatro meses todavía tengo que ver algún cambio en mi piel. Gente en instagram me comentaba que ellas empezaron a notar el cambio cuando dejaron de usarla, y si ése es mi caso volveré aquí y actualizaré pero de momento... me ha decepcionado muchísimo. El Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II tiene un precio de 100$ por 75ml, y que un producto tan caro no cambie nada aparentemente en mi piel... no me parece bien digamos.

However, I don't think that it means the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is a bad product, because I know it has worked for people and they weren't lying: it's just that it didn't work for me. I don't particularly have any of the problems this essence is supposed to aid with, I was just waiting for an overall improvement of my skin, but I sadly didn't see it.

And in case you were wondering, the "security system" is plastic that of course has "SK-II" written on it, obviously.


A pesar de ello, no creo que el Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II sea un mal producto, porque sé que hay a gente que le funciona y que no miente: simplemente creo que no ha funcionado para mí. No tengo en sí ningún problema con los que la esencia ayuda, simplemente estaba esperando que mejorara mi piel en general, pero no lo he notado.
Y por si os lo preguntáis, el "sistema de seguridad" es por supuesto un plástico que tiene "SK-II" escrito, obviamente.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence review

This isn't going to be my last product with galactomyces though, the Pitera formulation may be exclusive for them, but there are quite a lot of product now on the market that use them, so I want to try those to see if my issue is that galactomyces just don't do anything with my skin (which I've seen some people saying it happens to them). 

I'm just a disappointed that such a favorite product (an let's be honest, also such an expensive one) like the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence didn't work for me, but we can't expected to like everything, or that every product is going to do wonders for our skin.


Éste no va a ser el único producto con galactomyces que pruebe, la fórmula de Pitera es exclusiva para SK-II, pero hay bastantes productos en el mercado que los incluyen, así que quiero probarlos para ver si mi problema es que los galactomyces no me hacen nada (algo que he visto comentar a gente también).

Simplemente me decepciona que un producto tan favorito de tanta gente (y porqué no, uno tan caro) como es el Facial Treatment Essence de SK-II no me haya funcionado, pero no podemos pretender que nos guste todo, o que todos los productos que probemos nos vayan a cambiar la piel.
